Later in the books, a man says that deo needs to get off drugs, but it never said that he was ever on them. To be honest, I wouldn't recommend this book for anyone's personal reading.

It did have some interesting themes and have a lot of information to do with the struggle, but I do think there are better books if you are looking for a book that really moves you. Deo is remarkably mature for his age, but I presume that is the consequence both of growing up in the heat of a political conflict and having to look after a very dependent older brother.

Like in Diamond Boy, the emotional brutality of this one starts pretty close to the start of the book then again, it is a relatively short book for the amount of story Williams managed to pack in although the author does take some care in the start to give the reader a sense of what normality was like for Deo before embarking on an amazing journey of preservation to South Africa. Again, the cover implied a much happier story within, but I was prepared this time around, and although hard-hitting, I thought Williams did a decent job of toning things down to cater for a younger audience.

Another thing I liked about the book was how Deo had to overcome the haters that hated him for being a foreigner and he dominated his way all the way through the street world cup final.

After encountering numerous obstacles, including dangerous animals, unsavory characters, extreme violence, and drug addiction, they find that South Africa is not as welcoming to immigrants as they had hoped.

While some may find the content difficult even for young adult readers, it is a text that exposes teenagers to the reality of life as a refugee. In addition, it explores multiple diverse perspectives, discussing issues of race, culture, and even disabilities. I would recommend this text for students in grades Teachers may consider pairing it with a reading of Of Mice and Men, as the relationship between George and Lennie parallels that of Deo and Innocent, as do the themes of discrimination, perseverance, and the nature of being a migrant.

A fictional story based on events and experiences that took place in South Africa in This was when a lot of refugees were coming in from areas like Zimbabwe and Somalia and were being attacked by South Africans based on unfounded fears - xenophobia.
