After the joint compound has dried thoroughly sand it down with sandpaper, a sanding sponge or drywall sanding material. You may have to go back and apply a thin layer of joint compound, let it dry and sand again, then repeat this process until you get a smooth surface that blends with the surrounding wall. In my personal experience hot glue is good for holding the pieces while a better glue is used to permanently hold the drywall repairs. However over time the hot glue looses it's ability to hold tight to the drywall backing.

I have never tried a hot glue gun! This removes the patching over screw holes. Don't forget to paint the patch with primer first. Joint compound absorbs paint differently you will be able to see the patch if you just paint with regular wall paint. Next rental paint job I'm trying this.
